A Guidance Aviation helicopter and flight crew will join the the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP), American Red Cross, Baton Rouge Constables Office, Baton Rouge Community College Emergency Management, the Civil Air Patrol, and others during the CBRNE exercise (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Enhanced Conventional Weapons) on October 26 through October 27, 2013, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Saturday, October 26, 2013 and Sun, October 27, 2013; Class runs 9:30 a.m. to about 2:30 p.m. Saturday; the exercise begins about 3 p.m. and extends to 8 p.m. This latter portion Saturday may provide the best visuals for video and photography.
WHAT:
The American Red Cross has partnered with other community leaders to stage a training exercise designed to support the community’s ability to respond to a pandemic flu or Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) event.
Although high school and college students are the trainees this weekend, the exercise also provides an opportunity for the organizations to practice their roles and collaborate.
Saturday’s exercise will include several 30 minute classes that will introduce the national response framework, National Incident Management System, pandemic flu, HAZMAT, first aid, sheltering, mass care and logistics to prepare participating students for the training exercise.
THE EMERGENCY SCENARIO:
A pandemic flu / CBRNE exercise for high school and college-age students interested in disaster preparedness, community response and emergency management.
WHO IS INVOLVED:
Civil Air Patrol Cadets and Sea Cadets, as well as LSU and BRCC disaster management students, will learn from the American Red Cross and the following facilitators:
- Americorps
- BRCC EMS
- Guidance Aviation* and BRCC; (*including helicopter landing on site)
- Baton Rouge Constable’s Office
- Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Disaster Preparedness
- LSU Fire Emergency Training Institute
- LSU National Center for Biomedical Research and Training
- LSU Disaster Science and Management Association
WHY: A resilient community is one that is prepared for, responds to and therefore recovers from disaster more quickly. Exercises such as this one contribute to the development of the next generation of citizen volunteers and community leaders who understand the value of preparedness and expose them to career opportunities in emergency management and response.

What is a CBRNE exercise?
A CBRNE exercise, or, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Enhanced Conventional Weapons exercise is emergency response scenario based training with the overall intent to save lives. Additionally, this training is conducted to minimize the loss or reduction in resources necessary to respond to these types of emergencies.
